The history of present day Hindu Old Sukkurites can be traced to Shri. Gurnomal Dembla who migrated to Old Sukkur from the area of Delhi about 250 years ago. The Gurnani surname ( which means belonging to the family of ) originated from his name. Infact his original name was Gurdinomal ( which means given by Gurus ). The Demblas were an important community and most of them worked under the Muslim rulers of Delhi. Due to some misunderstanding, they earned the displeasure of the rulers and began to migrate to various lands. Some of them came to Sindh during the 18th Century.
Shri. Gunnomal Dembla who migrated to Old Sukkur, sought the patronage of the Muslim Elite of Old Sukkur who were known as Peerzadas. After the Demblas the other Hindu communites like the Chandwanis, Lalas, Bhatias, Ahujas, Shories and others settled down in Old Sukkur. Later, the other familes who came were the Kalanis, Balanis, Advanis, Motihars and others. After the death of Shri.Gunnomal Dembla his eldest son Shri. Zonkiram Gunnomal formed the Old Sukkur Hindu Panchayat and became the Mukhi ( Respected Chief ) of the Panchayat. At the time of India's Partition in the year 1947, Mukhi Keshavdas Dewandas, son of Mukhi Dewandas Zonkiram, was the head of the Panchayat. Most social and other problems were solved and amicably settled by the Panchayat and the people of Old Sukkur respected and recognized the role of the Panchayat in their wellbeing.
Old Sukkurities had a panchayat at Karachi by the name of Old Sukkur Association ( Karachi ). It was under the Presidentship of Seth Gordhandas S. Balani. It used to organise regular getogethers, picnics and excursion trips to distant places like Malir. About 200 to 300 members would regularly getogether on such occasions. Railway compartments were hired and cooled by huge slabs of ice for such excursions by rail.
